Every ring of squares has to narrow at precisely the right rate and every tone has to step down evenly — get one ring wrong and the funnel flattens out and the whole effect disappears. The opening also sits slightly off-centre, which is what makes the shaft look like it is being viewed at an angle rather than straight down.
